Cleaner Homes and Easier Cleaning with a Shelf Liner
If you are sick of always cleaning dirty shelves and want to provide your shelves with protection, take advantage of using a shelf liner. As you know, spring cleaning is a huge task and involves getting your hands dirty and dusty. It isn’t just because you have dirty floors either. A lot of people actually clean their floors and most visible surfaces at least once a week or occasionally within the month. This is why there are a lot of visible surfaces that are actually quite clean. The areas which aren’t clean however are typically those areas that we don’t look at everyday or shelves in the kitchen that we don’t see and so on.
How Does a Shelf Liner Work?
A shelf liner is something that you basically line your shelves with as the name suggests. It works in a number of ways but they work to protect your shelves from scratches or damages caused by water or other liquids. This is because it covers the actual shelf. When your shelves are exposed, especially if they are wooden shelves, you can easily scratch them when placing books, placing glasses or even knives.
Instead of direct contact with whatever could scratch your shelf, you will find that a shelf liner protects the shelf by adding that extra layer of contact. At the same time, most shelf liners are made from materials that can attract dust but stop it from flying off. What happens is instead of getting the dust on your clean linens or spreading the dust in the air, it can just be wiped off.
At the same time, some shelf liners are made specifically to cushion plates or glasses. When you place plates on top of each other, they have a certain amount of pressure between the individual dishes. If you happen to knock one too hard, it can break. Similarly, if you mistakenly bang a plate on a surface for whatever reason, a soft shelf liner can protect that plate from breakage. Moreover they can also prevent your plates from slipping and breaking.
What Materials are used to create a Shelf Liner?
There are a number of materials which are used to create a shelf liner. The reason for this is mostly because shelf liners can be used in more than one situation or location which means you have to adapt the material to the reason you are using it. Although a liner can be made of a number of materials, the most common of these are:
- Plastic – Plastic is one of the most versatile materials in the world. It is not only resistant to dirt but it is extremely easy to clean. All you need is a damp cloth and you can wipe away the dust or dirt on a piece of plastic. At the same time, plastic is generally resistant to scratches and it is also water-resistant, making it durable as a shelf liner.
- Rubber – Rubber is another favorite when it comes to shelf liners. Because of the fact that it is also scratch-resistant and also slip-resistant, it provides a good way to protect your shelves and whatever else you place on them. A favorite specific rubber material is EVA which stands for ethylene vinyl acetate or commonly referred to as foam rubber.
- Cork – This is a new favorite when it comes to shelf liners. Cork has of course, long been used in wine making but it is gaining more and more popularity as a shelf liner too. Cork is heat resistant and is also springy which is why it imitates rubber and plastic. At the same time, a big reason for its popularity is the fact that it is also environmentally-friendly and is a recyclable material.
In What Areas of My House Can I Use a Shelf Liner?
You can pretty much use shelf liners everywhere in your home. Although they are called shelf liners, they can pretty much be used all over the house and aren’t just limited to shelves either. If you want a cleaner home, you can use them all over the house and not just your shelves. Here are just a few of the places where you can use a shelf liner.
- Kitchen – Probably the most obvious place to use it is the kitchen. With all those breakable dishes you definitely want to make sure you keep safe.
- Storage area – Whether you are talking about a wooden shelf or you are talking about a metal one, a storage area is prone to accidents and the best way to avoid some of these accidents is to line your shelf with a material that will stop your stores from falling.
- Tool box – Tools can get extremely dirty especially when you use hammers and metal pins and even screws. Cleaning the tool box will involve taking out each tool individually if you don’t have a shelf liner but with one, you can use the liner to remove the tools and just wipe it down to clean.
- Shoe rack – Shoes carry sand, dust and whatever else you’ve been stepping on. A shelf liner will help keep the rack clean.
Should I Choose Adhesives or Non-Adhesives for My Shelf Liner?
Adhesive shelf liners can be easily placed on shelves and will not move out of place. On the other hand, it is more difficult to remove. And for full adhesive liners, you will need to have them replaced instead.
Whatever your cleaning needs are, a good shelf liner can make the role easier. The trick though is to make sure that you choose a shelf liner that works on the surface and for the purpose that you plan.
